Griseofulvin

Griseofulvin is commonly sold under brand names such as Gris-PEG and Grisovin.
Griseofulvin is an antifungal medication used to treat various types of fungal infections, primarily those affecting the skin, hair, and nails. It is particularly effective against infections like ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and fungal infections of the scalp and nails. Griseofulvin works by stopping the growth of fungi, allowing healthy tissue to replace the infected area over time. This medication is usually prescribed when topical treatments are ineffective or when the infection is widespread.

Directions

  • Take Griseofulvin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically once or twice daily with a meal, especially a high-fat meal, to improve absorption.

  • Continue taking Griseofulvin for the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve early, to ensure the infection is fully cleared.
  • The duration of treatment depends on the type and location of the infection, with some cases requiring several weeks or even months of treatment.

Special Precautions

  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, lupus, or porphyria before starting Griseofulvin, as it may not be safe for these conditions.
  • Griseofulvin can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors.
  • Women of childbearing age should use effective birth control while taking Griseofulvin, as it may cause birth defects. Avoid pregnancy during and for at least one month after stopping the medication.
  • Men are advised to avoid fathering a child during treatment and for at least six months after stopping Griseofulvin, as it may affect sperm.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Griseofulvin, as it can increase the risk of liver toxicity and cause adverse reactions.
  • Let your doctor know about any other medications or supplements you are taking, as Griseofulvin may interact with certain drugs, including warfarin (a blood thinner) and oral contraceptives.
